Many early electronic instruments and the compositions for them emerged during the 1920s. The first electronic instrument, the Theremin, was invented by Leon Theremin in Leningrad. This led to compositions for electronic instruments, evolving from previous compositions for noisemakers and re-purposed machines.

American inventor J.A. O'Neil first created a recorder utilizing magnetically coated ribbon. Shortly after, Laurens Hammond founded a company to produce electronic instruments and began manufacture of the Hammond organ.

This decade also marks the development of photo-optic sound recording used in cinematography. This process obtained visual information of sound waves as well as making it possible to synthesize sound from an artificially drawn sound wave.

The decade also marks a period of experimentation with sound art, which continues into present day.
